Backless Dresses

The art of dressing sexily is sometimes a difficult one. Sometimes women decide that a skirt so short Hugh Hefner would blush is sexy. Others think that a neckline so low one is practically not wearing a top fits the bill. Or, a woman will wear a dress that she thinks is sexy, but in reality all the men think she looks like a conservative schoolgirl. The solution? A backless dress.
Backless dresses lend an air of seduction, without screaming “look at me”. The definition is pretty self-explanatory: simply a dress that is missing fabric in the back region.
There are several types of backless dresses. Some are completely backless to the waist or hips. Others dip low in the back, but don’t quite reveal the whole thing. Some are backless but tie at the neck or have strips of fabric (or other materials like chains) running horizontally across.
Variations of the types of backs aside, backless dresses come in all sorts of styles. Usually more form fitting so that they stay on better, some are a little looser as long as they tie securely at the neck. Some have sleeves, some don’t. Ones with long sleeves and scoop backs tend to slide off the shoulders and can be a hassle.
Because the back detailing is just one of many aspects that make up an entire dress, of course many varieties exist. Long, short, colorful, not colorful; you got it! Although fabrics vary, they tend to err on the stretchier side. You certainly don’t really see any wool backless dresses, if any!
As for necklines, generally if they are completely backless they tend to have a crew or scoop neckline. Sometimes V-necklines. Generally the necklines are basic and more conservative, to make up for the revealing back. Backless dresses are a perfect way to at first appear innocent, yet once you turn around, femme fatale.
Bra or no bra? This is the most crucial, demanding dilemma when sporting a backless dress. Well, ladies, there are a few options. For those with smaller, perky breasts wearing non sheer dresses, you can get away with no bra.
If you have medium sized breasts or are wearing super sheer fabric, there are “cups” or also pasties that you can buy to either support or at least cover what you don’t want to be made obvious. Backless dresses are sexy enough without giving a complete peep-show!
Generally, if you have very large breasts, backless dresses may be a no-no. If they are kind of casual, then you can pair a strapless bra with a fun matching bandeau over it. Yes, you will see the bandeau in the back, but if it’s lacey or cute and matches the dress, then that’s fun and stylish. However, if it is a low cut ball gown….a bandeau simply won’t look right.
Because of their quiet sex appeal, backless dresses obviously shouldn’t be worn everywhere. Don’t think about wearing them to work, funerals, religious functions or any other event where the attitude is somber, not let’s-seduce-every-male-here. The more casual versions are appropriate for certain daytime events, the dressy or revealing versions more special event or club appropriate.
