Casual Dresses

A true fashionista always wants to look and dress her best. Sometimes, however, she does have her days where she wants to appear stylish but doesn’t want to sacrifice comfort. What’s a girl to do? This is when casual dresses come into play. Defined as a dress that can be worn for most basic occasions. They are usually “middle of the road” when it comes to certain aspects.

A casual dress may be long or short, but usually is neither of the two extremes. Detailed, but usually not heavily so. Usually they lack the glitzy trimmings of evening and party dresses like sequins, sparkles, beads and abundant amounts of lace and ruffles. Generally, the look is more conservative, but many times they are sleeveless or have an alluring approach.

Because in the past few years dresses have come back into favor and soared in popularity, there are tons of different dresses out there to purchase. However, they are not all the same; the term casual is slightly vague as there are different levels of casualness.

A casual event defined basically is an “event” where anything goes, that doesn’t have certain standards. However, there are different levels of casual events. For example, running errands is a lot more casual then having a relaxed lunch with friends, yet both are considered casual events. There is no strict dress code attire for either situation. However, one might choose to dress differently for both situations. Like the variety of events that fall under the headline of casual, there are a variety of different types of casual dresses.

For instance, some companies offer dresses made of terrycloth, a material usually reserved for bathrobes. This is extreme comfort, the ultimate material of relaxation, made as girly as possible by being used for a dress. One may want to wear this grocery shopping, instead of sloppy sweatpants of the same material. The casual lunch with friends? Unless it’s McDonalds, then most likely not, if you are one who is obsessed with fashion and appearance.

Then others offer casual dresses that look like a simple long tee shirt. This kind of dress can work for a variety of casual occasions, depending on how it is accessorized. Pair it with flat sandals and a simple necklace, and you have a look perfect for shopping with the girls. Throw it on with lavish jewelry and a pair of wedges and now you’re ready for that movie date.

Then you have those brands that carry structured, fitted casual dresses with nice finishing touches that are much more refined and perfect for said lunch with friends, even a more upscale lunch or dinner, but still not appropriate for a formal event.

Have an invite to a party? If it is a wedding, a black tie event, or specifies attire for example “formal wear” then a casual dress is a no-no. A small intimate party at your best friends apartment? Then go for it girlfriend! Pick one that’s more fitted, with sexier details. Add glitzy jewelry and heels, and you have just transformed from darling day dressed to the perfect party princess.

Want to wear a casual dress in the workplace? Unless a suit is a daily necessity, or a uniform or certain colours/pieces are required, then you are in luck. The more tailored dresses can be utilized as work wear, as long as they are not super short in length and have a conservative enough neckline, based on your workplace. Button down collared dresses are cute yet conservative and a great choice when paired with low heels and tights.

Now, of course a fashionista loves to shop. It’s one of her past times. Casual dresses are usually not purchased on “mission trips”, aka shopping trips when you are on the hunt, eyeglasses and red bull for extra energy in hand, for that certain garment that you just “must have”, either because you just crave it after seeing it in magazines or need it because your friends bachelorette party is tomorrow and you have nothing to wear. These types of dresses are usually purchased, ironically, on casual shopping trips, when one is browsing to see what suits ones fancy.
