Prom Dresses

When growing up, there are many special events in a young girls life. One of the biggest events before she enters adulthood is prom. The word conjures up images of dancing, eating, and limos dispersing girls in fancy outfits. One of the biggest events of your high school life, it is one that most girls take very seriously. Who are you going to bring as a date? What limo service are you going to book? Most importantly of all- where are you going to find the perfect prom dress?!

It’s the question all girls agonize about all year: what to wear to prom?! Because it is such a special event, of course you want to look your best. If you are a senior, it is extra special, as it is one of the last times you and all of your classmates will be gathered together.

Of course, you want your dress to be special and unique. Everyone has heard the horror stories of another girl coming in the same dress as you! If you live in a small town, with few shopping options, avoiding this fate can get tricky, unless you drive further away to do this important shopping.

The first thing to consider is what exactly is your prom like? Prom has definitely changed over the years. In the past, girls spent sometimes thousands of dollars and perfect hair, professionally done makeup, limos, and big poufy dresses that made them look like they were competing for the Miss America crown. Prom was the ultimate event, and everyone tried to outdo each other in terms of money and dress.

Now, however, times are different. While many schools still hold proms like this, not all do. Some schools, particularly smaller ones, often have more casual proms. Girls wear knee length dresses, sometimes even shorter. Their prom dresses may come from nice stores, not specialty shops catering to prom. They might wear flats, or dresses that aren’t as glitzy and can be used for another occasion.

Still not sure how people at your school handle prom? Unsure of whether you should go for the bedazzled floor length gown or a cocktail length  prom dress? Well, consider where your prom is being held. If it is being held in your high school gymnasium, it’s probably a safe bet that you don’t have to go all out and book some wedding artist to do your makeup. Then again, you never know! Some girls go to town no matter what.

The safest way to know that you are choosing a perfect prom dress is to talk with your friends or older girls who have already been to a prom at your school. If you know what kind of dresses the other girls that you are going with or friends with are wearing, then you can get a general idea on what look you should go for. That being said, it is YOUR prom, so wear what you like and feel comfortable in!

So, once you know where your prom is held, and what people generally wear and if it’s uber fancy or more laid back, you can set to work on finding your prom dress! As previously mentioned, there are specialty shops that cater specifically to proms. You can also hit up nicer stores or stores that feature dressier clothing when searching.

Always keep in mind the standard things such as what dress size you are, what shapes flatter your body, what colors and materials you prefer, etc. Comfort is important when choosing a prom dress. Although many girls tend to sacrifice comfort for style, bear in mind that prom IS an active event. You are going to be dancing and walking from table to table and chatting. You don’t want your prom dress to be so tight that you can’t breathe or walk!

Prom dresses come in all shapes in sizes. Besides the destination you are wearing them to, there is really no other defining factor about them, except that they are generally fancy and not ordinary daytime dresses. They generally are very brightly colored, although some girls favor pastels or neutrals.

Some prom dresses are long. Long versions may have big poufy skirts, while others may be sleek and hug your legs. Some dresses are short, hitting above the knee of a little below it. Concerning fabrics, the textiles used are generally stretchy or are of a good luxury quality like silk. Most are cut for a tight fit, at least in the bodice.

Mind you, Prom is a school event. While short prom dresses are okay, and many girls nowadays are even wearing club dresses to prom, remember that adults from your school will be there. A dress with a deep v-neck, cut outs, and a hem that barely covers your bum probably should be saved for another time. You don’t want to make a bad impression on the adults that supported you all these years, or possibly even be told that you are dressed inappropriately!

One thing that most prom dresses have in common is that they are usually heavily embellished. Sequins, beads, rhinestones are extremely popular trimmings. Most girls favor dresses of this style. However, if your prom is more casual, girls tend to opt for print dresses or classic simple styles that are elegant yet not over the top. This seems to very popular in the past seasons.
